Projects for Education and Outreach Work

Introduction

Education work is an important part of the Community Arts Programme at The Corn Exchange and New Greenham Arts. We can either offer workshops from visiting companies or we can source a tutor or practitioner to suit your needs.

We can also arrange weeklong residencies for schools/youth groups. Previous companies that we have booked include Kaos Theatre, Motionhouse, Circo Rum Ba Ba, The Cholmondeleys and the Featherstonehaughs, Earthfall and Unlimited Theatre.

Creative Practitioners

The Corn Exchange Community Arts Programme is excited to announce that we are now working with Creative Partnerships Slough to deliver projects in West Berkshire schools over the next year.

Creative Partnerships is a creativity programme for schools and young people aimed at nurturing the creativity of learners and educators, and developing creative approaches to teaching all aspects of the curriculum.

For more information about Creative Partnerships please visit their website at http://www.creative-partnerships.com/aboutcp/
and for any inquiries about Creative Partnerships in West Berkshire please contact Christina Pepper on 01635 582666 ext. 239.

Cineclub

West Berkshire Cineclub is a film-making project for young people managed by The Corn Exchange. It began in 2006 with nine local schools and day centres taking up the challenge of producing short films. Each club received training and support by Cineclub, a London-based arts organisation.

They premiered their films at The Corn Exchange in September 2006 and in January 2007 the young people became official Cineclub peer-mentors in a Graduation and Awards event at The Corn Exchange. From directing to editing, acting to script-writing, the young people not only learn film-making skills but also have the opportunity to address issues relevant to them, build confidence, learn how to work as a team and make new friends.

The next Cineclub screening will be on Monday 15 October at 7.45pm.

Wise Crackers!

Wise Crackers! is a comedy competition (part of the Newbury Comedy Festival) for young people in school (ages 12-18).

We pair these comedy hopefuls with professional comedians who share the ins and outs of live comedy performance. This competition is also a fun opportunity to improve participants' confidence, public speaking and creative writing skills.

The competition is divided into two categories: acts ages 15 years and under, and acts ages 16-18. In addition to becoming local comedy heroes, participants from both categories have the chance to win £250 for their school and a prize for themselves.

The Panto Mural Project

The Panto Mural Project is a seven-week visual arts project aimed to engage primary school pupils at risk of exclusion. Eight pupils from West Berkshire primary schools are invited to work with professional artist Sue Rollings to create an installation for The Corn Exchange's pantomime.

The children's work is displayed in the foyer and each child receives a certificate for their participation which is presented to them by local dignitaries at a celebration event for the children and their families.

Arts and Autism

The Corn Exchange and The Vodafone UK Foundation have been working together to realise the next piece of public art for Newbury. This sculpture will be a collaboration between 120 autistic children from three local schools (Prior's Court School, Castle School and Brookfields School) and Glaswegian artist Kate Robinson.

The Playing, Experiencing and Creating Arts Project began in July 2006. Utilising the expertise of special needs educators, artists and musicians to engage children and young people on the autistic spectrum, the new piece of public art will encourage debate and raise awareness of autism locally.

Look for the sculpture in October 2007.
